Getting Certified Updated 9/12/2008

The procedure to get your umpiring certification is to:

o        CERTIFICATION CLINIC:  Attend ONE of the certification clinics covering in detail the rules and umpiring.

o        WRITTEN EXAM:  Complete and successfully pass an exam totaling 50 points.  You require 75% to pass.  The exam has true/false, multiple choice and long answer and covers the rules and a little on umpire positioning.  If you simply read the rules book, you are way ahead of the game!

o        PRACTICAL/FIELD ASSESSMENT(S):  This is when a certified assessor comes out to a specified match and observes that you are meeting particular minimum requirements.  Registrants should endeavour to complete their assessment by the end of the outdoor season and can make arrangements by contacting one of the qualified assessors - a list of the assessors will be made available to umpires.

To obtain your OUTDOOR umpiring certification, you need to pass ONE assessment (at a B-league, C-league or high school league or tournament match) for your Provincial B certification and TWO assessments (at an A-league match) for your Provincial A certification.

To obtain your INDOOR umpiring certification, you need to pass ONE assessment (at an indoor league or tournament match) for your indoor certification.  Your certification level will be equivalent to the level of the indoor league (Div. I, II, or III) that you are umpiring and being assessed at.

Then you are done!  Certification lasts for 5 years and expires on December 31st of that fifth year.

Upon completion of your certification, some teams may offer a reimbursement of the clinic registration fee - talk to your team representative for details.

Rules Updates Updated 4/8/2009

NEW FIH MANDATORY EXPERIMENTAL RULE

"Self-pass or auto-pass"

This will be implemented to the leagues starting May 1, 2009

Information will be sent out, and covered at the clinics.  Hopefully the new rule will be implemented with few problems
